During her time residing in Washington DC, Sue had been exploring her identity and sexuality. After her separation from Henry, she came out as a lesbian. She became heavily involved in local feminist and lesbian events and organizations. She also got involved with other lesbian mothers in the DC area and networked with them to explore a non-nuclear family way of raising children.

Sue used her First Things First organization to distribute not only feminist books and materials, but LGBTQIA ones as well. She engaged in pride events and marches on DC's capitol in support for gay and lesbian rights.
