Joseph Arthur Greene, Jr. was born October 19, 1920, the youngest child of Joseph Arthur and Cozie Josephine Carpenter Greene. After his birth in Johnson City, Tennessee, his father, a self-educated man who worked in the railroad industry, moved the family to Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
