Johnson, chairman<br /> <br /> July 23, 1964<br /> <br /> <br /> Memorandum<br /> <br /> To: Honorable Herman Glazier, administrative assistant, office of the governor<br /> <br /> From: director, sovereignty commission<br /> <br /> Subject: communism and race agitators<br /> <br /> We worked several days with mayor W. O. Williford of Drew helping him acting like accumulate information to be aired at a police court hearing. Mayor Willifordwas accumulating reports from Los Angeles and senator Eastlands office as well as the sovereignty commission.<br /> <br /> Tuesday afternoon, over the phone, he advised he was ready and the case would be heard at 10 AM, Wednesday, July 22. We told him we would be responsible for getting press coverage. We called the commercial appeal and the Clarion ledger and told them of the impending hearing and asked that they send reporters. The news that came out of Drew, Thursday morning, perfectly timed with Senator Eastland‘s speech in Senate, dealt and effective blow against those racial agitators with communist backgrounds or associations.<br /> <br /> We would like to recommend again, even more particularly at this time, that Governor Johnson consider making the statement that the FBI should grow with the prestige and reputation of that office in exposing the names of all racial agitators know through FBI files to be associated directly or indirectly with communist organizations. Communism charges are now being heard in New York and Washington, as well as Mississippi. In a sense we would be putting the FBI on a serious spot. They cannot deny the existence of such files because of director who verse earlier statement that can communist have infiltrated the racial movement. If the FBI chooses to remain silent, it could be well consider that the Lyndon Johnson administration is muzzling FBI on purpose to avoid any further proof public proof that the racists Are being led by communist.<br /> <br /> We believe such a statement would be far more effective if issued by the governor; however, if the governor thinks otherwise, the sovereignty commission could issue a statement if he grants permission.<br /> <br /> Signed Earl Johnston, Junior.

Letter from Earl Johnston Junior to Honorable Frank de Barber February 4, 1964.<br /> <br /> The letter is on Mississippi state sovereignty commission letterhead which list the address as new capital building, Jackson, Mississippi governor Ross are Barnett, chairman<br /> <br /> It is addressed to Honorable Frank D Barber, special assistant to the governor, the capital, Jackson, Mississippi<br /> <br /> Dear Frank:<br /> <br /> I’ve read with interest you enclosure from Dr. Claude a Fike pertaining to an anti-communism Institute for teachers. This appears to be an excellent idea it would certainly be far more effective than occasional seminars in Jackson or speakers address small audiences, who already believe in what the speaker has to say.<br /> <br /> In my recommendation to Governor Johnson for sovereignty commission program during his administration, I mentioned that we could operate affectively on $200,000 for the biennium instead of $250,000 under which we are now operating in the $225,000 recommended by the budget commission. This could be done only if the sovereignty commission can use its funds for its own administrative programs and support of such necessary projects as the anti-communism institute. This is a memo from Earl Johnston Junior the director of the Mississippi state cut sovereignty commission, to honorable Paul B Johnson, governor and Carol Garten, lieutenant governor. It is dated May 5, 1964, and is on Mississippi state sovereignty commission letterhead. The report is about A D Biettel, Tougaloo college.<br /> <br /> Our pipeline information from Tugaloo says the trustees gave as their reason for dismissal of Dr. Beittel that he was in efficient. This will certainly work to our advantage. Had Dr. Beittel been asked to resign because of racial agitation or collaboration with communist front organizations, he could have made a martyr out of himself. As it is, he can say nothing because the trustees would naturally answer any statement he made by stating he was discharge for inefficiency. And it efficiency rating is difficult for any professor to overcome in seeking new employment.<br /> <br /> We also have been informed that the bill we proposed in the legislature two separate authority of the Mississippi a credit in commission from the southern association is a weapon very much feared by Tugaloo authorities. If Mississippi accreditation is taken away they stand to lose considerable money which otherwise would be available from certain foundations. This bill, SB1794, it’s now all the Senate calendar, and we recommend that it be speedily past and signed into law.<br /> <br /> We also are informed that during the weekend, the SNCC office on Lynch Street in Jackson had on display a big picture of Kruschev with this caption “our man in Moscow.“ We have pass this information onto local press for a possible news picture if the photograph is still on display.<br /> <br /> We have had no direct contact with the Tugaloo trustees since the announcement about Dr. Beittel <br /> <br /> We will keep you informed as to future developments.<br /> <br /> Signed Earl Johnston Junior.<br /> <br /> CC: Honorable Shelby Rogers
