Judaism: Writing & Studies
Another area of passion and complexity in Sheila Michaels' life was her deep-seated faith in Judaism. She was a biblical scholar, and during the 1980s and 90s, she wrote midrash interpretations of texts that focused on biblical women. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, she delivered these during services at Congregation Beth Simchat Torah Temple, a progressive temple that attracts and welcomes gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender, non-binary, queer, and straight people in New York City. In her later years, she continued delivering midrashic in St. Louis, Missouri.
