An unnamed speech written by Madge Burney for the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Madam President, Honored Guest, and Daughters of the Confederacy:

It is indeed a great privilege to have so distinguished and lovely a body of women within our gates. To be a Daughter of the Confederacy is the most elegant tribute a patriotic woman can pay her confederate ancestry and is a vindication of Confederate History. before all of the world. When a question is asked "Is there still a Dixie," let the answer be "Look at the vast throng of the Daughters of the Confederacy and doubt it if you dare.

Let me ask you to keep the sacredness of our work even before you. Remembering always that we are a sisterhood of earnest women striving to fulfill God's teaching that we honour our Fathers.
I feel sure that each of us realize what a grand distinction it is to be a Daughter of the Confederacy We realize that no organization has a broader field of work than our own. In time we embrace the past, the future and with vivid intensity, the present. In all affairs of the State and Nation the Daughters of the Confederacy stand at attention ready to fall into line and march in the front ranks of the worlds workers. Unity, faith and loyalty are the foundation to any great Democracy, reminding the members of Chapters the importance in their respective communities. What you feel, what you think how you act, are the influence you mould and yield both individually and as an organized body, is going to make a tremendous difference in the eventful character of our nation, When we shall have merged into a newer destiny
These ideals have inspired the officers of the organization in the past, have inspirited them in the accomplishments of higher and better things and has brought the United Daughters of the Confederacy to its present high standard of efficiency. We bespeak for the new officers the same lofty spirit, the same broad activity the same supreme accomplishments in the future.

In this spirit we extend greeting to the officers of the past, present and future and through them to the Organization as a whole. We are grateful to Mrs. Flourney our Historian General who honors us with her presences this evening. We extent to her our heartiest welcome, we are indeed glad to have her and to feel the inspiration of her devotion and loyalty.
We are working with tireless zeal to collect and preserve a true history of the South. All over this broad lands of ours Daughters of the Confederacy are education worthy boys and girls, who could not otherwise obtain training for life's duties.

I am not unmindful of the poet's warning "Let him not boast who puts the armor on." A brand new officer just of the ranks, what has she to offer to such an assemblage of the wisest and most experienced are also the kindest in measuring honest and sincere efforts, gives me courage to bring this simple message of greetings.

To all of these lofty ideals and purposes all of our women most heartily subscribe.
