Children's Work<br /><br />

Madam President, Daughters of the Confederacy, Friends:-<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Show me the womanhood of a nation and its childhood and I will tell you what the status and morale of that nation is. Robert Speer the great thinker made this assertion and I am sure that all within the sound of my voice realize the truth of it. <br /><br />
<br /><br />
In our work of keeping alive Southern valor and preserving authentic Southern history, we must look to our most priceless inheritance--the Children of the Confederacy. We must win the present generation, for we can not do without the splendid assets of youthful optimism, idealism, power of vision and spirit of adventure. <br /><br />
<br /><br />
The child is plastic, capable of being molded and youth is the golden period fo mental hygiene. There is no age more important than childhood, more interesting. If you wish to be of real service to the world, do something for young people and children. For many years a duty has been laid upon the womanhood of the South- to train the children in patriotism and loyalty to organize them into chapters of earnest, little workers, busy hearts and minds to be about the Southland and the appreciation of their valiant ancestors. Many women have heeded the call and chapters of Children of the Confederacy have sprung into being all over our fair land. These children are our heritage, they will inherit our spirit and our organizations. When we pass to them the torch, we expect them to hold it on high and to keep it burning with an eternal flame. <br /><br />

Madam President, Honored Guest, and Daughters of the Confederacy:<br /><br />
<br /><br />
It is indeed a great privilege to have so distinguished and lovely a body of women within our gates. To be a Daughter of the Confederacy is the most elegant tribute a patriotic woman can pay her confederate ancestry and is a vindication of Confederate History. before all of the world. When a question is asked "Is there still a Dixie," let the answer be "Look at the vast throng of the Daughters of the Confederacy and doubt it if you dare.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Let me ask you to keep the sacredness of our work even before you. Remembering always that we are a sisterhood of earnest women striving to fulfill God's teaching that we honour our Fathers.

My dear Mrs. Burney, <br /><br />

You have the card I wrote the other day suggesting that the next work of the Children be the Winnie Davis Memorial Scholarship, honoring the "Child of the Confederacy" for she was born in the Executive Mansion, during the War Between the States. <br /><br />
<br /><br />
Meeting at Biloxi, so near Beauvoir, where every association is that of the Davis family, it appears a peculiarly appropriate time for the inauguration of this special memorial, In suggesting that the next united work of the Children be education I am actuated as I told you in Mobile, by a desire to have the C of C familiar with, and interested in every department of the U.D.C. Their first work was very appropriately memorial, the first work of the U.D.C. was monument building; but their present work is largely educational, and the future will be entirely educational and historical. After the completion of the scholarship I think they the children should take up some special historical enterprise, but that is to be considered later. <br /><br />
<br /><br />
I suggest therefore, the recommendation as a part of your report, of the Winnie Davis Memorial Scholarship. I suggest that it be 1, 000.00 I believe the Children can stand that amount, and as you know I am opposed to giving them so large a sum as to discourage them. That it be loaned that it be not an endowed but a straight scholarship, that it be administered by the Committee on Education in like manner as the U.D.C. Scholarships, and that it become operative as soon as soon as there is as much
